Science & Technology Facts

Astronomers found a twin star to Earth’s own sun, which is much older. The rare star is the oldest known solar twin and can tell what Earth star will looks like in 4 billion years. The star, called HIP 102152, appears to be as similar to the Sun in its basic characteristics as any other known star. The sun is only 4.6 billion years old; HIP 102152 is 8.2 billion years old.

Acer on 2 September 2013 launched a new Smartphone with a 6-inch screen called the Liquid S2 which is the world’s first 4K recording Smartphone which is four times the resolution of current full HD. 4K video will be shot using the phone’s 13 megapixel rear camera and the power of a quadcore Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor which is clocked at a stunning 2.2GHz.

A new scientific study showed that ageing works through a special set of genes that everyone has, the rDNA genes. The international team led by Dr Takehiko Kobayashi from the National Institute of Genetics in Mishima, Japan, found that if we improve the stability of the rDNA genes, which are quite unstable, the lifespan of baker’s yeast could be extended. It could help in studying cell ageing.

Scientists have discovered that the sleeping patterns of baby owls are similar to that of human babies. The sleep of baby birds appears to change in the same way as it does in humans, researchers at Germany’s Max Planck Institute for Ornithology and the University of Lausanne in Switzerland have found.

An Indian-origin designer has developed “smart” street lamps, which light up only in the presence of people or vehicles. The invention could slash energy costs by 80 per cent. Chintan Shah invented the system dubbed Twilight when he was a student at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. The lamps have sensors that can distinguish between people and small animals like cats and mice, to avoid lighting up unnecessarily.

MANGALYAAN: INDIA’S MAIDEN MISSION TO MARS
Mars Mission 2013

Mangalyaan also known as Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) is India’s first interplanetary expedition, designed to study the red planet and serve as a technology demonstrator for future missions.
MISSION TIMELINE
  1. Following launch, spacecraft circles Earth for 4 weeks, firing its engines six times to gradually boost its orbit.
  2.  Seventh engine burn puts craft on trajectory for Mars. The voyage takes 300 days to reach the Mars orbit.
  3.   It then enters Mars orbit for 160 days mission.
Mission Mars--Details

The total mission cost almost4.5 billion ($70 million). Height of this rocket (PSLV-XL: Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) is 44.5m.
Science instruments used are:-

  1. Lyman Alpha Photometer (LAP)
  2. Thermal Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (TIS)
  3. Mars Colour Camera (MCC)
  4. Methane Sensor for Mars (MSM)
  5. Martian Exospheric Neutral Composition Analyzer (MENCA)
The Launch date of he Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), informally called Mangalyaan (मंगलयान) is 5 November 2013 09:06.

Higgs Boson

Hi guys! Welcome to a science blog(sc-blog). Today I am going to discuss some common questions asked about the 'God Particle'--Higgs Boson.
Proton-Proton collision--Large Hadron Collider

Q1.WHAT HAS BEEN ACHIEVED BY CERN SCIENTISTS?

ANS:-SCIENTISTS HAVE FOUND A NEW EPHEMERAL SUBATOMIC PARTICLE THAT HAS A MASS ABOUT 126 TIMES THAT OF A HYDROGEN ATOM AND LEAVE BEHIND SIGNATURES SIMILAR TO THOSE OF EXPECTED FROM THE HIGGS BOSON, A PARTICLE PREDICTED TO EXIST IN 1964.

Q2.WHAT IS THE HIGGS BOSON, AND WHY IS IT CALLED THE GOD PARTICLE?

ANS:-THE HIGGS BOSON PARTICLE IS THE FINAL MISSING PIECE OF THE SO-CALLED STANDARD MODEL, A MATHEMATICAL THEORY OF PHYSICS THAT EXPLAIN ALMOST ALL PARTICLE S AND FORCES IN THE UNIVERSE, EXCEPT GRAVITY.THE HIGGS BOSON EXPLAINS HOW OR WHY ALL THE OTHER PARTICLES IN THE UNIVERSE AQUIRE MASSES.WITHOUT THE HIGGS PARTICLE, THERE WOULD BE NO MASS, NO STARS, NO GALAXIES, NO UNIVERSE IN ITS CURRENT FORM – AND NO LIFE.HENCE, PERHAPS, THE REFERENCE TO GOD.

Q3.HOW DOES THE HIGGS GIVE MASS TO PARTICLE?

ANS:-PARTICLES AQUIRE MASS THROUGH THEIR INTERACTION WITH HIGGS BOSON --THE STRONGER THE INTERACTION, THE GREATER IS THE MASS OF THE PARTICLE, THE WEAKER THE INTERACTION, THE LIGHTER IS THE PARTICLE (i.e. INTERACTION IS DIRECTLY PROPORTIONAL TO MASS).
LET US ILLUSTRATE THROUGH AN UNCONVENTIONAL EXAMPLE INVOLVING A FAMILIAR FIGURE .IMAGINE SRK (A HEAVY PARTICLE) WALKING DOWN A STREET WITH A GAGGLE OF PHOTOGRAPHERS (THE HIGGS BOSONS) CLUSTERED AROUND HIM. AN AVERAGE GUY ON THE SAME STREET (PHOTON (LIGHT+ELECTRON) OR A MASS-LESS PARTICLE OF LIGHT) GETS NO ATTENTION FROM THE PAPARAZZI AND GETS ON WITH HIS DAY.THE PHOTON (NORMAL GUY) DOES HAVE ANY MASS BECAUSE HIGGS BOSON (THE PHOTOGRAPHERS) ARE NOT REACTING TO IT BUT THE OTHER PARTICLE (SRK) IS HEAVY BECAUSE OF ITS INTERACTION WITH THE HIGGS BOSON (PHOTOGRAPHERS).

Q4.DO 4.07.12(DATE)’S RESULTS CONFIRM THE EXISTENCE OF A HIGGS BOSON?

ANS:-4.07.12’S RESULTS CONFIRM THE PRESENCEOF A NEW SUB-ATOMIC PARTICLE, PREVIOUSLY UNKNOWN TO SCIENCE.THIS NEW PARTICLE LOOKS AND BEHAVES LIKE THE HIGGS IN SOME WAYS.BUT PHYSICSTS ARE NOT SURE YET THAT IT IS THE HIGGS BOSON PREDICTED BY THE STANDORD MODEL OR SOME OTHER HIGGS BOSON PREDICTED BY OTHER THEORIES OF PYHSICS.

Q5.WHY DOES PHYSICISTS WANT MORE EVIDENCE?

ANS:-THEY WANT TO BE SURE THAT IT FITS ALL PREDICTIONS OF THE STANDARD MODEL. IMAGINE AN IDOSYNCRATIC BANK THAT INSISTS ITS CUSTOMERS USE FIVE DIFFERENT AND UNIQUE SIGNATURES, AND SIGN EACH CHEQUE WITH ALL FIVE SIGNATURES. A CHEQUE WITH ONLY TWO OR THREE OF THE UNIQUE SIGNATURE WOULD BE NOT BE HONOURED. IN THE COMING MONTHS, SCIENTISTS HOPE TO AUTHENTICATE THE OTHER SIGNATURES OF THE OBSERVED NEW PARTICLE.

Q6.IF THIS IS PROVEN TO BE THE HIGGS BOSON, WILL THERE STILL BE UNRESOLVED ISSUES IN FUNDAMENTAL PHYSICS?

ANS:-PLENTY. THE STANDARD MODEL IS AN INCOMPLETE THEORY OF THE COSMOS. IT DOES NOT EXPLAIN NEITHER GRAVITY NOR IT EXPLAINS THE ACCELERATING UNIVERSE, WHICH HAS BEEN ATTRIBUTED TO A MYSTERIOUS DARK ENERGY.
